The story of Tuam Town Hall
The first civic building on the Square was a market house of 1700 on its south-west side, arcaded below so markets could shelter under it and with an assembly room for the corporation above. When the Municipal Corporations Act abolished the corporation in 1840 the building stood empty until town commissioners were appointed three years later, and they chose to pull it down and build properly.
John Stratford Handcock of Carrowntryla House let them the site for a nominal rent, and his wife Elizabeth Penelope Handcock laid the foundation stone on 24 September 1857. James Joseph Boylan designed the hall in the neoclassical manner and Andrew Egan, the man later called the builder of Tuam, raised it in coursed limestone the same year. The front to the Square is six bays wide and deliberately lopsided: five bays of mullioned windows, then an ashlar-faced bay carrying a four-stage tower with the entrance below, lancet windows above and clock faces at the top under an octagonal lantern. The assembly hall is on the first floor.
The hall was badly damaged in July 1920 when armed police attacked it and other property after an IRA ambush outside the town. Today it is used for community events. Tuam's council itself has changed shape several times: town commissioners from 1854, a town council from 2002, and since then the Tuam Municipal District of Galway County Council.
