Presentation College, Athenry

Athenry's Presentation convent was a daughter house of Tuam, and its sisters taught first in the old girls' primary school at Abbey Row before a new school went up on parish land behind the convent. In the late 1920s they added secondary classes on top of the primary school, and in 1930 four girls sat the Intermediate Certificate, the ancestor of today's Junior Certificate. Presentation College, Athenry, now under the CEIST trust, is the school that grew from those four.

The school and its sports

The college offers the Junior and Leaving Certificate cycles and Transition Year and plays Gaelic football, camogie, hurling and soccer; the camogie sides of the school were the base of Athenry's club successes when it was founded in 1973 by Gilbert McCarthy, a teacher here. Cathal Moore, the Galway hurler born in 1975, is on the staff. The model on this page pins the college with the castle, the priory and the station.
