Noel Lane

Ballinderreen's most famous hurler struggled to make his school team. Noel Lane, born in Ballyglass on 11 December 1954, could not break into the Our Lady's College side in Gort that won four Connacht titles in a row, yet by twenty-two he was on the Galway seniors and by 1980 he had an All-Ireland medal, with two more to come in 1987 and 1988.

Galway and Connacht

Lane made his senior debut in the 1977 to 1978 league and played 22 championship games, winning three All-Irelands and losing five finals, with league medals in 1986 to 1987 and 1988 to 1989. For Connacht he won five Railway Cups, in 1980, 1982, 1983, 1986 as captain and 1987, having lost the 1979 final to Leinster at right corner-forward. He was an All-Star in 1983 and 1984 and Galway Hurler of the Year in 1984. He studied forestry and agriculture at Athenry, Kinnitty and Avondale and became a regional manager for Coillte. On 11 October 2000 he beat Mattie Murphy by 33 votes to 21 to become Galway manager, and in his first season the team beat the champions Kilkenny in the All-Ireland semi-final.
