A short history

  1. Legend
The Firbolg on Mount Gable. The hordes gathered on the hilltop two kilometres west before their clash with the Tuatha Dé Danann at the Battle of Moytura.
  2. Early Christian times
Teampall Bhréandáin. In Ross Hill cemetery the ruin stands inside an oval cashel; its western end, with the inclined jambs of a trabeated doorway, replaced the wooden church thought to be Brendan of Clonfert's own settlement.
  3. 13th century
Ballykine Castle. One of five forts from Ballinrobe to Ballindonage, built by the O'Kynes, seized for the Crown in 1571 by Edward Fitton, held by the Burkes and given to the MacDonnell mercenaries, and at last part of the Guinness estate.
  4. 19th century
The Guinnesses. Petersburg, the Lynch seat, and Ross Hill, once the unpopular Earl of Leitrim's, both came to the Guinness family; Petersburg's house and yard are now an outdoor education centre.
  5. 2012
All-Ireland junior champions. Cumann Peile Naomh Pádraig won the All-Ireland junior club football championship of 2011 to 2012.
