Aer Arann Islands

The three small aircraft parked beside the runway at Inverin are the whole fleet of an airline that has been flying to the Aran Islands since 8 August 1970. James Coen, Ralph Langan and Colie Hernon set up Galway Aviation Services that year with one Britten-Norman Islander and called the service Aer Arann from the first day; the same type of aircraft, ten seats and two engines, makes the crossing today.

From one Islander to three

The early airline tried some short-lived expansions, including a summer service along the south and west coasts with a Short Sandringham flying boat. The island service is what lasted. As of February 2025 the fleet is three BN-2 Islanders, registered EI-AYN, EI-BCE and EI-CUW, flying from Connemara Airport to the airstrips on all three islands. The Connemara Airport guide covers the airfield and the Aran Islands guide the ferries; the model on this page pins Inverin's college and beaches.
