Rossaveal

Most people who pass through Rossaveal are on their way to the islands. The harbour at Ros an Mhíl is the main ferry port for Inishmore, Inis Meáin and Inisheer, 37 kilometres west of Galway along the coast road, and the boats run all year. The name means the peninsula, or the wood, of the whale, or of a sea monster, depending on whom you ask.

Harbour and village

The townland had 208 people at the 2011 census, 73 per cent of them speaking Irish every day, and it hosts the Ros a' Mhíl centre of Coláiste Chamuis, the Irish-language summer college for teenagers. Bus Éireann route 424 connects the harbour to Galway and to the ferries. The Aran Islands and Inishmore guides describe what the boats sail to; Connemara Airport at Inverin, a few kilometres east, is the alternative. The model pins the harbour and its fishing fleet.
