Renvyle

Tully and Tully Cross are the villages of a peninsula that the Atlantic holds on three sides and the Dawros river closes on the fourth. Renvyle, the bald peninsula, lies under Letter Hill, or Tully Mountain, 356 metres, with Clifden twelve miles south and Letterfrack and Leenaun close by; on its western tip stand the ruins of Grace O'Malley's castle, and near it the medieval church named for the seven daughters of a king who preached along this coast.

Castle, church and seven sisters

The Seven Sisters of Renvyle, in the stories daughters of a King of Leinster or of a chief of Omey, preached along the coast of Conmhaicne Mara and left their names on holy wells at Renvyle, Cleggan, Aillebrack, Doon Hill and Mweenish and on a cursing stone; Anthony Previté suggests they settled at last on Mason Island. Teampall na Seacht nIníon, the ruined medieval church at Renvyle Point in Cashleen, is dedicated to them. The O'Malley castle stands close by.

Renvyle House and the villages

Renvyle House at Rusheenduff was the Blakes' home, single-storey until a floor was added in the mid-1800s with timber said to come from a wreck in the bay, and the family owned the peninsula as far as Lettergesh East; sold before the War of Independence to the surgeon and poet Oliver St John Gogarty, burned in the Civil War and rebuilt, it is a hotel. The peninsula has a pharmacy, three primary schools, hotels and B&Bs, a post office, a supermarket, pubs, riding, a golf course and a crèche, and Kylemore Abbey, the girls' school until 2010, is two miles off. The Connemara Mussel Festival, Bog Week and Sea Week are the local festivals. The model pins Renvyle's beach and castle.
