The history of Tully
The evictions of 1881 and Gogarty's house. 2 moments, in order.
- 1881
The evictions
Caroline Blake, the landowner, believed her tenants exaggerated the failure of the crops; the Land League told them to withhold full rent, and a meeting in Tully Cross church was said to have discussed five pounds to have her killed. She evicted 109 people in September. The Land Court then cut her rents so far that she opened Renvyle House as a hotel, to some sympathy in the press.
- 20th century
Gogarty
Renvyle House, a mile west, was the home of the poet Oliver St John Gogarty before it was the hotel it is now.
