A short history

  1. Ancient times
The gCaislé. A sept who lived between Casla and An Cheathrú Rua, from whom the Costelloe family here claims descent; the name may also mean the twisting creek.
  2. 1922 to 1925
Costelloe Lodge. The fishing lodge burned in the Civil War; Edwin Lutyens built the big house that replaced it in 1925, with gardens by Gertrude Jekyll, for J.
  3. 1921, in fiction
The Wind Changes. Olivia Manning's novel of the independence fighters has the last leader of 1916 set to land at the pier at Costello.
  4. 1972
The radio. RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta has its headquarters in the village.
