A short history

  1. 12th century
The O'Connors' tuath. Dunmore belonged to the ancient tuath of Conmaicne Dúna Móir, ruled from the twelfth century by the O'Connors of Uí Briúin Aí, and was for a time a capital of Connacht.
  2. Early 13th century
The de Berminghams' castle. The Anglo-Norman family built the first castle on the hillock outside the village as a bulwark against the Irish.
  3. 1249, 1284 and 1315
Three attacks. The O'Connors burned the castle in 1249, Fiachra O'Flynn's forces besieged it in 1284, and an army under Rory O'Connor attacked and damaged it in 1315.
  4. 1977 to 1998
The clubs. Dunmore RFC was founded in 1977, Dunmore Town AFC in 1979 with underage teams in the Roscommon league, and Dunmore Demesne Golf Club in 1998.
  5. Early 1980s
The traffic goes. Until then the N83 through Dunmore was on the main road from Sligo to Galway; improvements to the N17 through Knock and Claremorris took the traffic away.
  6. 2022
664 people. The census count for the town at the junction of the N83, R328 and R360.
