Mountbellew Agricultural College

The first agricultural college in Ireland is in Mountbellew, founded by the Franciscan Brothers in 1904 on the site of their secondary school. It is still private and still theirs, teaching in association with Teagasc and with Atlantic Technological University, whose own Mountbellew campus grew out of a business course the college began with the Galway Regional Technical College in 1986.

Brothers, Teagasc and the university

The original college building was demolished in 1971 and replaced in 1975. The link with Galway's technical college began in 1986 with a Higher Certificate in Business Studies in agribusiness that led on to a business degree; an evening course for adults followed in 1998 and further certificates from 2001. Today ATU students at Mountbellew choose between agri-business, agri-science and agri-engineering degrees and split their time between here and the Galway campus.

In the town

The college and Holy Rosary College, the secondary school, are pinned on the model with the town's square. The ATU guide on this site covers the university's other campuses, and the getting-here page has the buses to Galway and Ballinasloe.
