Joe Canning
Portumna's most famous son scored 1-11 in a county final at seventeen and finished as the championship's all-time top scorer. Joe Canning made his senior debut for the Portumna club at fifteen in May 2004, won four All-Ireland club titles with them, and in fourteen seasons with Galway won the All-Ireland of 2017, when he was named Hurler of the Year. He holds the record for sideline cuts scored, 28, and his 62 championship appearances are a Galway record.

A hurling family
His uncle Frankie played minor for Galway in the 1960s and was a substitute in the 1981 All-Ireland final. Of his siblings Séamus, Frank, Davy, Ollie, Ivan and Deirdre, all but one won an All-Ireland medal at club or county level in hurling or camogie; Ollie captained Galway and won four All-Stars, and Deirdre played county camogie. Joe won an All-Ireland minor title in 2004 at fifteen and another in 2005, and a Fitzgibbon Cup with Limerick IT in 2007, scoring 1-16 in the lost 2008 final.
Portumna and Galway
He was in the Portumna side beaten by Athenry in the 2004 county final, scored 1-11 when they beat Loughrea in 2005 for a second county title and went on to All-Ireland club titles in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2014, with county titles in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2013. Galway's manager Conor Hayes considered him for the senior panel at seventeen; once there he won three Leinster championships and three National Leagues and the All-Ireland of 2017, and five All-Stars. He retired from inter-county hurling on 28 July 2021, has been a pundit on RTÉ's championship coverage since 2022, featured in Laochra Gael in 2023, is a UNICEF Ireland ambassador, married Megan Hoare in November 2022, and runs a restaurant in Galway and a bar in Athlone. The model on this page pins Portumna's castle, abbey and the town he still plays for.
