Portumna GAA

For most of its history Portumna was a junior hurling club on the edge of the county. Founded in 1888, it played football before hurling arrived in 1910, took a county junior title in 1914 and won East Board juvenile titles in the 1950s and 1960s before disbanding briefly in the 1970s. Then, in November 2005, with a seventeen-year-old Joe Canning scoring 1-11 in the final, it won its second county senior title and began the run that made it a byword.

The great years

Portumna beat Loughrea 3-21 to 3-14 for the 2005 county title and Four Roads 2-22 to 0-06 for Connacht a week later, then won the All-Ireland club championship of 2006, and again in 2008, 2009 and 2014, with county titles in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2013. The club is hurling only; its players also stocked the Galway team of the 2010s. The Joe Canning guide tells the story of its most famous player, and the model on this page pins the castle and the town.
