The football clubs of north Galway

The county's football tradition lives in the parishes around Tuam. Tuam Stars is the oldest senior club still going, Dunmore MacHales won the very first county championship in 1889 and Milltown is the second oldest senior side; Killererin beat Corofin for a sixth title in 2010, and little Caltra went all the way to an All-Ireland club title in 2004. Corofin, with five All-Ireland club titles, is the giant among them.

Tuam Stars and Dunmore

Tuam's first football club was formed in December 1887 to play association football; pressure to adopt Gaelic rules followed, the Tuam Herald argued against it, and in February 1889 the club switched codes as Tuam Stars and played its first game on St Patrick's Day. Dunmore MacHales won the first Galway Senior Football Championship in 1889 and had two great decades, 1900 to 1912 and the 1960s, when they took five of ten titles and gave five players to Galway's three-in-a-row team; their last county title was 1983, their last final 1997, and they stand fourth in the all-time list. Páirc Mhic Éil has been home since 1973, replacing the Demesne, also called the Captain's.

Milltown, Killererin, Caltra and Abbeyknockmoy

A Milltown club called John O'Keanes beat Dunmore on 6 April 1888, and Milltown Erin's Hope existed by 1901; the present club dates from 1953, won the county championship in 1971 and 1981 and six Division 1 leagues, reached the 2007 final after twenty years and lost to Killererin at Pearse Stadium, and gave Galway Noel Tierney, the Texaco Footballer of the Year, in the three-in-a-row team. Killererin, founded in 1889 as Killererin John Dillon's, spent most of a century in junior football, won its first junior title in 1968, its first senior title in 1976 and its sixth in October 2010. Caltra won Galway, Connacht and All-Ireland senior club titles in 2003 and 2004. Abbeyknockmoy, founded in 1953, is the hurling exception, senior county champions in 1988. The model on this page pins Tuam Stadium and the town.
