Oranmore railway station

Ten minutes on the train from Oranmore to Ceannt Station beats most mornings on the N6. The station at Garraun, on the east side of the town, opened on Sunday 28 July 2013 as a park-and-ride with 140 car spaces run by the county council and bike racks, and it is served by the Dublin to Galway intercity as well as the commuter trains to Athenry, Athlone and Limerick.

1851, 1963, 2013

The Midland Great Western Railway opened the first Oranmore station in 1851 on its Dublin to Galway route. Córas Iompair Éireann closed it in 1963 and the building was sold as a private house, which is why the new station was built at Garraun rather than on the old site. It had been due to open in 2011 with Phase 1 of the Western Rail Corridor but was left out, and came two years later.

Where the trains go

Westward, every train ends at Galway. Eastward the commuter service runs to Athenry and on to Athlone, and via the corridor to Limerick, where connecting trains reach Limerick Junction for Tipperary and Waterford, and Cork. The model on this page pins the castle and Rinville; the getting-here page has the buses along the coast road.
