Clifden Castle

On the hillside west of Clifden, where the Sky Road climbs above the bay, a medieval-looking gateway of 1815 opens onto a path that wanders across the grass to a roofless Gothic house. This is Clifden Castle, built about 1818 by John D'Arcy while he was still laying out the town below, empty since 1894, and now a ruin among grazing cattle, sheep and horses, with a cow pen in one wing.

The founder's house

John D'Arcy, who lived from 1785 to 1839, built the castle for his large family even as he built Clifden, and the land around it was among the first he drained and reclaimed. Facing south over Clifden Bay, it is Gothic Revival in the taste of the early 1800s: a round tower to the south-east, a square tower, an entrance tower with two round turrets; most of the decoration, though, was added by the Eyre family in the 1850s and 1860s. D'Arcy set standing stones along his drive, and four remain on the path from the gateway; one may be a prehistoric stone brought from elsewhere. West of the house he built a farmyard with a grain store, workers' cottages, stables and a coach house, and a walled garden with a well and pond.

Famine and ruin

When D'Arcy died in 1839 his eldest son Hyacinth inherited, and he had neither his father's skill with the estate nor his way with tenants. Then the potato failed in 1845. Hunger and fever swept the district, people emigrated in desperation, and the rents collapsed; on 21 September 1846 Hyacinth's tenants gathered in a mass on his front lawn to beg for work or food. The house was uninhabited from 1894, and in 1935 ownership passed jointly to a group of tenants, after which it fell quickly into ruin. Several families own the castle and demesne today.

Getting there

The gateway is visible from the Sky Road a short way out of Clifden; the ruin is a walk of some minutes across the hillside from it, on private grazing land, and the model on this page pins it with the town and the road.
