Inis Meáin
Between Inishmore and Inisheer lies the island that changed least. Inis Meáin has some 184 people at the 2022 census, all Irish speakers, and it is where John Millington Synge came every summer from 1898 to 1902 to sit on a stone chair above the cliffs and listen to the stories that became Riders to the Sea and The Playboy of the Western World. The great fort of Dún Chonchúir stands above the villages, and the sitting-out chair is still there.

Rock, weather and flowers
Like its neighbours the island is Burren limestone from a tropical sea 350 million years ago, split into clints and grykes and scraped by the last ice. Air temperatures run from 15 °C in July to 6 °C in January and the soil rarely drops below the point where grass stops growing, so the growing season is among the longest in Ireland or Britain; late May is the sunniest time and the best for gentians and mountain avens, with orchids later. Arctic, alpine and Mediterranean plants grow together in the grykes, and the pearl-bordered fritillary and brown hairstreak are among the butterflies.
Forts, churches and Synge
Eight sites are national monuments: Dún Chonchúir, Dún Fearbhaí, the Doonbeg ringfort, the Carrownlisheen wedge tomb known as Diarmuid and Gráinne's Bed, the Carrownlisheen cross and the churches of Templesaghtmacree, Labbanakinneriga and Kilcoonagh. Teach Synge, where Bríd and Páidín Mac Donnchadha hosted the playwright, was lived in by their descendants until the 1970s, fell into disrepair, and has been restored and open to the public since August 1999; Cathaoir Synge, his chair, looks over Inishmore and the sea.
Living on the middle island
A submarine cable brings electricity and a desalination plant makes water, though shortages are still common. There is a primary school and, since 1 September 2003, Coláiste Naomh Eoin, the secondary school for all three islands, with a science lab from 2008 and workshops added by 2010. The library opens Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Cead, a game found nowhere else, is played once a year on St Patrick's Day; the school runs the Inis Iron Meáin race and a parkrun starts at noon on Saturdays so day visitors can join. The Caladh Mór jetty of 2007 takes ferries from Rossaveal and Doolin and there is an airstrip. Martin McDonagh set The Cripple of Inishmaan here in 1996. The model on this page pins Dún Chonchúir among the Kilronan-area forts.
