Atlantic Technological University in Galway

The campus on the Dublin Road that everyone in Galway still calls GMIT became part of Atlantic Technological University on 1 April 2022, when Galway-Mayo IT merged with IT Sligo and Letterkenny IT into the fourth technological university in Ireland. It is the university's administrative headquarters, and two smaller Galway campuses belong to it: the art college at Cluain Mhuire and the furniture college at Letterfrack.

The Connacht-Ulster Alliance

The three institutes made alliances in 2012 and in 2015 submitted a formal expression of interest to the Higher Education Authority for re-designation as a technological university; the partnership, the Connacht-Ulster Alliance, planned a formal application in 2021 and a start in 2022, and the plan was a tenet of GMIT's strategy for 2019 to 2023.

The Galway campuses

The Dublin Road campus in Ballybane, overlooking the bay, has four schools: business, engineering, science and computing, and the Galway International Hotel School, with an innovation hub, a lifelong learning centre and a research centre. About 1.2 km west, on the Wellpark and Monivea roads, the Centre for Creative Arts and Media occupies Cluain Mhuire, a protected 1940s Redemptorist monastery that has housed the design and creative arts school since 1998 and teaches design, contemporary art, film and documentary, textiles and fine art. Letterfrack in Connemara is the National Centre of Excellence for Furniture Design and Wood Technology, teaching furniture since 1987, and Mountbellew, the first agricultural college in Ireland, founded by the Franciscan Brothers in 1904, offers agri-business, agri-science and agri-engineering degrees split with Galway. Sligo, St Angela's, Letterkenny, Killybegs and Castlebar complete the university. The model pins the main campus, the library and the sports centre.
