Coláiste Éinde

The long 1930s building on Threadneedle Road, on the city council's list of protected structures, is a diocesan secondary school of about 800 pupils named for the saint who founded the monastery on Inishmore. Coláiste Éinde began a few months after the new state, on 23 October 1928, in Blake's House at Furbo, as a residential college where boys taught through Irish prepared to become national school teachers; entry was by a hard scholarship exam.

Furbo, Dublin, Salthill

The stay in Furbo was short. The school left at Christmas 1930 for Talbot House on Talbot Street in Dublin, moved to Glasnevin in 1934, and settled in Salthill in the building finished in the 1930s. It is run by a board under the Diocese of Galway, has a compulsory uniform and six base classes a year; juniors take the core subjects with French, German or Spanish and three options from business, graphics, woodwork, art, music and home economics, and Transition Year is optional.

Past pupils include the hurler John Hanbury, the footballer Daryl Horgan, two GAA presidents, Joe McDonagh and Séamus Ó Riain, the writer Breandán Ó hEithir and the sean-nós singer Seán 'ac Dhonncha.
