Aaron Connolly and Greg Cunningham
Both of them learned the game in Mervue. Greg Cunningham went from Cregmore to Mervue United in 2004 and on to Manchester City's academy; Aaron Connolly, nine years younger, started with Maree/Oranmore at five, joined Mervue at eleven and was at Brighton by sixteen. One is now managing in the city, the other still scoring in England.

Cunningham
Born in Galway on 31 January 1991, Cunningham made his Manchester City debut as a half-time substitute in a 4-2 FA Cup win over Scunthorpe on 24 January 2010, went on loan to Leicester in October 2010, twelve starts at left-back, and to Nottingham Forest in October 2011, and signed a four-year contract at Bristol City on 5 July 2012 to play regularly. Preston, Cardiff, Blackburn and Galway United followed, with four Ireland caps between 2010 and 2013. On 24 June 2026 Salthill Devon named him manager for their first season in the FAI National League.
Connolly
Brighton took him on trial in summer 2016 and gave him a two-year scholarship. His first senior goal came in a 2-1 EFL Cup win at Bristol Rovers on 27 August 2019 and his league debut four days later at Manchester City; loans took him to Luton in 2019, Middlesbrough in January 2022, Venezia in Serie B and Hull in January 2023, where he signed permanently that August and scored against Sheffield Wednesday from the bench. Sunderland signed him in September 2024, Millwall in January 2025, where he scored after thirty seconds against QPR, and Leyton Orient on a two-year deal on 7 July 2025. He was Ireland's top scorer in qualifying for the 2017 under-17 European Championship with seven goals, and on World Mental Health Day 2024 spoke publicly about his alcohol addiction.
