Galway GAA

Galway is one of the few counties that plays hurling and football at the same level, and for most of its history it ran them separately: a football board and a hurling board, two crests, two jerseys, two sponsors, with a county board over them only in theory. Both codes play their big home days at Pearse Stadium in Salthill, and the model on this page pins it.

Football

Galway had stood in for Connacht in the championship before, but only in 1911 did it earn the provincial title outright, beating Roscommon by a point, 1-3 to 1-2, before losing to Cork. Connacht titles followed in 1913 and 1917, and in 1919 the county reached its first All-Ireland final after a semi-final replay against Cavan, losing 2-5 to 0-1. Galway was the first Connacht county to win the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the second after Mayo to appear in the final. At club level Corofin hold five All-Ireland club titles, and Moycullen were county champions in 2025.

Hurling

Galway lost the very first All-Ireland hurling final in 1887 to Tipperary and did not return until 1923, when it beat Limerick for a first title. Four more finals in that decade, 1924, 1925, 1928 and 1929, were all lost, as were three in the 1950s. Galway clubs won three All-Irelands in a row from 1992 to 1994, Athenry won in 1997, 2000 and 2001, and Loughrea were county champions in 2024.

Camogie and ladies' football

Five Galway clubs have won the All-Ireland senior camogie club championship: Oranmore in 1974, Pearses five times between 1996 and 2002, Athenry in 1977 and 2025, Mullagh in 1990 and Killimor in 2011. The county lost eight senior finals, including the first in 1932, before winning in 1996 under Imelda Hobbins, and has three national league titles. In ladies' football Galway won the All-Ireland senior title in 2004 and 2026, junior titles in 1985 and 2002, the intermediate in 1992 and seven under-18 titles.
