Nicola Coughlan

The most watched actress to come out of County Galway grew up in Oranmore. Nicola Coughlan was born in the city on 9 January 1987, the youngest of four; her father served in the Irish Army and died in 2017, and her mother stayed at home. At five, watching her sister in a school play, she decided what she would do, and Derry Girls and Bridgerton made her one of the best-known Irish faces on television.

Early parts

She had an uncredited role at nine in My Brother's War in 1997 and began properly in 2004 in Tom Collins's short revenge comedy The Phantom Cnut, then did voice work in animation. In 2018 she became Clare Devlin in Derry Girls, the Channel 4 sitcom set in the last years of the Troubles, borrowing her accent from Nadine Coyle of Girls Aloud; it became the channel's most successful comedy. Bridgerton, announced in 2019 and first shown in December 2020, cast her as Penelope Featherington, the reluctant debutante of a nouveau riche family in Regency London, and the third series brought a Screen Actors Guild nomination. Big Mood, from 2024, brought a BAFTA nomination for Maggie Donovan.

Campaigns and campaigns

In February 2019 she led 28 women with suitcases across Westminster Bridge, one for each woman a week who then travelled from Northern Ireland to England for an abortion, to demand decriminalisation. She has fronted campaigns for Pat McGrath Labs and Bridgerton make-up in 2022, Uber Eats Australia against period poverty in 2023 and Skims in 2024. When Derry Girls first aired, and again in 2024, social media fixated on her age against her characters' and she has spoken about the toll of that commentary. The model on this page pins Oranmore's castle and the village she grew up in.
