The Stunning

Brewing Up a Storm was written by a band from Galway that played its first gig in the Hilltop Hotel in Salthill. Steve Wall formed The Stunning in 1987 with a horn section that soon left for other careers, and by the early 1990s the band's live shows and the singles Romeo's on Fire, Half Past Two and Heads Are Gonna Roll had given them a following across the country that has never gone away.

Up, down and back

Paradise in the Picture House came in 1990 and Once Around the World in 1992, with the live Tightrope in 1993 and the compilation Milking the Hits in 1994. Business disappointments and no breakthrough abroad ended the band that year after a sell-out Irish tour, a fifth Féile and two final nights at the Warwick Hotel in Salthill, their base. Steve and Joe Wall formed The Walls in 1998 and made three albums; Drowning Pool from New Dawn Breaking opened the film Begin Again. In 2003 the reissued debut on Dirtbird Records went to number two and fourteen sold-out shows drew over 20,000 people; Twice Around the World followed in 2018 and the live film We Come Alive in 2024. The model on this page pins Salthill's promenade and the venues of the city.
