Town Hall Theatre

The five-bay neoclassical front with its Doric portico facing Courthouse Square looks like a courthouse because it was one. Alexander Hay designed it as the Galway Town Courthouse, directly opposite the county courthouse of a decade earlier; work began on 21 June 1824 and finished in 1825. It later held the council chamber and offices of Galway Corporation, and today it is the city's main theatre.

Hay's building

The facade is symmetrical, five bays wide, with the end bays stepped slightly forward and the central three bays under a tetrastyle portico of Doric columns carrying an entablature. The end bays have segment-headed windows with voussoirs. The royal arms that stood on the entablature were removed during the War of Independence, as they were from the courthouse opposite.

Druid on the stage

The theatre's refurbishment was fresh when Martin McDonagh's The Beauty Queen of Leenane had its world premiere here on 1 February 1996, a Druid and Royal Court co-production directed by Garry Hynes with Marie Mullen and Anna Manahan. On Saturday 16 July 2005 DruidSynge, all six of Synge's plays, opened here during the Arts Festival before Dublin and beyond. The model on this page pins the theatre, the courthouse and the bridge, and the pubs and restaurants around the square have their own pages.
