Connemara National Park
The gate of Connemara National Park is on the Clifden side of Letterfrack, and from the visitor centre the trails climb Diamond Hill through bog and heath to a view over Kylemore, the islands and the sea. Opened in 1980, one of Ireland's eight national parks, it covers 2,000 hectares of the old Kylemore estate: mountains, blanket bog, heath, grassland and woods, with court tombs four thousand years old inside its bounds.

What grows in the bog
Western blanket bog and heath cover most of the park, bog in the wet low ground and blanket bog on the drier mountainsides. Purple moor-grass paints the hills; bog cotton, lousewort, milkwort, bog asphodel, orchids and bog myrtle grow with the lichens and mosses. Because bog holds so few nutrients, some plants eat insects: sundew and butterwort are the commonest of the park's carnivores.
Birds, deer and ponies
Meadow pipits, skylarks, stonechats, chaffinches, robins and wrens are the everyday birds; kestrel and sparrowhawk hunt here, merlin and peregrine less often; woodcock, snipe, starling, thrushes, redwing and fieldfare come for the winter. Field mice fill the woods, and badgers, foxes, pine martens and bats move at night; otters, hares, stoats and pygmy shrews live here too. Red deer, gone from Connemara for about 150 years, have been reintroduced, and a herd of Connemara ponies grazes the park.
Walking it
The trails start at the visitor centre in Letterfrack and range from a short nature trail to the loop over Diamond Hill. A nineteenth-century graveyard and the megalithic court tombs lie within the park. Kylemore Abbey is a few kilometres up the road, and the model on this page pins the centre, the village and the roads between.
