The hurling clubs of south Galway

Between Gort and the bay every parish has a hurling club and most have been county champions. Gort's seven titles run from 1914 to 2014 with an All-Ireland final in 1984; Clarinbridge went one better and won the All-Ireland club championship at Croke Park in March 2011; Kinvara, Ardrahan and Craughwell are older than the county board itself.

Gort and Ardrahan

Hurling was played in Gort from the GAA's first years in the 1880s and the modern club was formed at the turn of the century. It won the county senior championship in 1914, 1916, 1934, 1981, 1983, 2011 and 2014 and Connacht in 1982 and 1984, and after the 1983 title reached the 1984 All-Ireland club final, losing to Ballyhale Shamrocks in a replay; the 2011 title was its first since 1983. Ardrahan, founded in 1884, is almost purely a hurling club.

Clarinbridge, Kinvara and Craughwell

Clarinbridge won county titles in 2001 and 2010, Connacht titles the same years, and on a March day in 2011 beat O'Loughlin Gaels 2-18 to 0-12 at Croke Park for the All-Ireland with Michael Donoghue as manager; its minors won A titles in 1992, 1998, 2015, 2016 and 2018. Kinvara was formed in 1889 as Killoveragh, uniting Kinvara, Dooras and Killina, reached its first county final in 1979 and lost to a Castlegar side built on the Connolly brothers, and plays junior football too. Craughwell, founded in 1885, was awarded the 1909 county title over Loughrea. The model on this page pins Gort's square; the Galway GAA guide covers the county.
