Gort railway station

Gort had a railway station for a century, lost it for thirty-four years, and got it back in March 2010. The new station on the Western Rail Corridor puts the town on the line between Limerick and Galway, with Ennis to the south and Athenry, where the Dublin line crosses, to the north.

1869 to 1976, and back

The first station opened on 15 September 1869 on the line from Athenry to Ennis, and closed on 5 April 1976 when passenger services on the route ended. Under the Transport 21 plan, Iarnród Éireann rebuilt it as part of the Western Rail Corridor. Work was to begin in 2008, but a local company objected on the grounds of traffic hazards; the objection was withdrawn in January 2009, the rebuilding went ahead, and the station reopened in March 2010.

Using it

Trains run north to Athenry and Galway and south to Ennis and Limerick. The station is on the edge of the town; the square, the river walk and the shops are a short walk, and Coole Park and Thoor Ballylee are a few kilometres out. The Getting here page has the bus stops and car parks, and the model pins the streets between station and square.
