Galway Technical Institute and Galway Community College
Galway has taught trades since January 1894, when thirty-five men began classes in mathematics, physiography, machine construction, building and woodwork in a building on Dominick Street bought by the Poor Law guardians. The Galway Technical Institute is the descendant, now on Father Griffin Road in the Claddagh with ten departments of QQI Level 5 and 6 courses, and it is about to move again, into a 77 million euro campus beside Galway Community College at Wellpark.

GTI
By 1908 the technical school was teaching bookkeeping, commercial correspondence, mechanics, physics and chemistry, and early in the twentieth century it outgrew Dominick Street. Today's departments are applied health sciences, art and design, arts and social studies, business and law, fashion, hairdressing and beauty, IT and computing, media, sport, and design and engineering technology, with part-time adult courses alongside.
Galway Community College
GCC at Wellpark is both a secondary school and a further education college with QQI courses, teaching 454 students in 2025. In 2022 its parent body, the Galway and Roscommon ETB, was awarded 77 million euro for a new building beside it to house the Technical Institute, bringing GTI, GCC, Youthreach, adult basic education and the board's other services onto one campus. The model on this page pins both colleges with the Claddagh and the ATU campus on the Dublin Road.
