Joe Connolly

People of Galway, we love you: Joe Connolly's speech from the Hogan Stand steps on the September day in 1980 when Galway won a first All-Ireland hurling title since 1923 borrowed its line from the Pope's Mass at Ballybrit the year before. He was born in Castlegar on 13 October 1956, one of a big Irish-speaking family with Gaeltacht roots who later went into hurley-making, and he played the game first at St Mary's College.

1980

Connolly joined the Galway minors at sixteen, then the under-21s, and made his senior debut in the 1976 championship. At UCG he was full-forward on the team that beat St Patrick's, Maynooth, 1-14 to 1-12 for the Fitzgibbon Cup of 1977. In 1980 everything came at once: the All-Ireland club title with Castlegar, the All-Ireland with Galway as captain, the Railway Cup with Connacht, the Texaco Hurler of the Year award and an All-Star. He added county and Connacht club titles with Castlegar in 1984.

After playing

A Bachelor of Arts in Irish and geography at UCG led to teaching. He was a Galway selector under John McIntyre from 2008, when the league title of 2010 came with a 2-22 to 1-17 win over Cork, managed Castlegar's seniors, sat for years as a non-executive director of TG4, analyses on Seó Spóirt and co-hosted Jockey Eile with Seán Bán Breathnach. The model on this page pins Castlegar's ground and Pearse Stadium.
