The GAA clubs of Galway city
Three clubs carry the city's Gaelic games. Castlegar, on the north-east edge, was hurling before there were records and won the All-Ireland club title in 1980; Liam Mellows in Renmore waited 47 years for a county title and got it against Gort in December 2017; and Salthill-Knocknacarra, the football club of the west side, went all the way to an All-Ireland in 2006.

Castlegar and Liam Mellows
Folklore says Castlegar had a hurling team before 1880, playing at Claregalway, Turloughmore and Oranmore. It is among the most successful clubs in the county championship, with seventeen titles from 1936 to 1984, and won the All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship of 1980, the first club west of the Shannon to do so. Liam Mellows, hurling and camogie in Renmore, won county titles in 1935, 1945, 1946, 1968 and 1970 and Connacht in 1970, then nothing until 12 November 2017, when a 0-13 to 1-9 win over Cappataggle at Athenry put them in a first final since 1970; they beat Gort on 3 December and lost the All-Ireland semi-final to Cuala at Thurles. On 21 October 2023 the club won its first Junior A camogie championship with Niamh McPeake player of the game.
Salthill-Knocknacarra
Founded in 1966 as Cumann Naomh Ciarán, the club won more than ten minor and under-21 titles in the 1980s, its first senior football championship in 1990 with a Connacht title after it, and lost the 1991 All-Ireland final to Lavey of Derry with Alan Mulholland, later Galway manager, and Pat Comer, who made A Year 'Til Sunday, on the team. County titles followed in 2005 and 2012, the Connacht title in 2005, the All-Ireland club title of 2006, the junior hurling title of 2021 and the All-Ireland junior ladies' football title of 2022.
